Where Can You Smoke Weed in Massachusetts?

It’s legal for adults 21+ to smoke weed in Massachusetts. But let’s be clear – you can’t consume cannabis in any form in public. If you’re caught, you could face a fine of up to $100.

And you especially can’t consume on federal land, like courthouses, post offices, and national parks. You’re just asking for trouble. A first offense is punishable by up to one year in prison and a minimum fine of $1,000.

But there are places in Massachusetts where you can smoke legally. Here are a few of them.

Private residences

In Massachusetts, it’s legal to smoke weed at a private residence, which means you can do it at home if you own the property. Inside and outside.

If you rent, things can get complicated. Landlords have the right to ban cannabis use in their rental properties, so check your lease for any restrictions. Your landlord might not care either way if you smoke, so clarify with them before lighting up.

And if you live in a complex of some kind with multiple units, there are a few more things to consider. Since smoke can travel through vents and such, it could bother your neighbors.

To be respectful of those around you, think about smoking in a well-ventilated space. Or use alternatives like a vaporizer, which gives off less odor.

Outdoor areas

Remember, it’s illegal to smoke weed in public. This includes outdoor places like parks, beaches, and sidewalks. Even though you might see people smoking in these places, it’s still against the law.

But if you’re on private property – like your own backyard or a friend’s porch – you’re allowed to consume as long as you have permission from the property owner.

Be respectful of neighbors who might be averse to the smell drifting over. You might even consider staying out of view since cannabis can still attract complaints, even though what you’re doing is perfectly legal.

Consumption lounges and clubs

A consumption lounge is a place where people can go to socialize and consume cannabis.

And in Massachusetts, there’s only one – The Summit Lounge in Worcester. On a regular night, you just pay $10 to get in, and then you get full access to the club.

Inside, you’re allowed to consume anything that’s legal in Massachusetts. Smoking weed is permitted anywhere in the building, be it a joint or a full ounce. It’s up to you. You just can’t bring more than an ounce, of course, since that’s illegal.

There’s also Diaspora, a member-only cannabis club in Cambridge. You can smoke and enjoy infused events in a safe, private environment. Music, comedy, trivia, and more.

Hotels and accommodations

In Massachusetts, cannabis policies vary across hotels and other accommodations. Some have strict no-smoking rules, while others allow guests to consume in designated smoking areas or outdoor spaces.

If you’re considering a hotel, call ahead or check the website to confirm their policy on cannabis use. Here are some hotels in the Boston area, for instance, that supposedly have 420-friendly lodging with balconies and smoking rooms:

  • The Bostonian
  • The Verb Hotel
  • Hyatt Regency Cambridge
  • DoubleTree Suites – Boston / Cambridge

There’s even a website, budandbreakfast.com, to help you find cannabis-friendly inns, rooms, and bed & breakfasts.

For vacation rentals, sites like Airbnb often include property details that note if smoking is allowed. Know the rules ahead of time so you don’t run into trouble or have to cut your trip short.

Private events

There are events that allow cannabis consumption at members-only establishments, like The Summit Lounge. And there are events in private spaces and at outdoor venues with designated consumption areas. They all need to operate within the state’s legal framework.

A few types of 420 events in MA where you might be able to light up:

  • Cannabis festivals
  • Cannabis-themed comedy shows
  • Cannabis industry golf events like the TeeHC Open
  • Lifted yoga and meditation
  • Paint-and-puff nights
  • Puff pottery classes

With private events, the policy is going to be Bring Your Own Cannabis (BYOC). Or cross your fingers that someone will share!

Just double-check the event page or call the organizer to make sure smoking is allowed. Don’t assume it is.
